Section 8 housing vouchers were created to help the millions of Americans that can’t afford reasonable housing. While most people know about it, a surprising number of people that need it have no idea how to get it or even what the requirements are. Do you need Section 8 but don’t have all of the information you need? If so, here’s what you need to know.
 

Eligibility

  • U.S citizen or eligible for immigration
  • Earn less than 50% of the median income for county/metro area
  • Other family composition and asset based criteria depending on county
 

How to Apply

  • Visit your local public housing authority
  • To find the public housing authority for your area, check HUD.gov
  • Be sure to bring pay stubs and rent or mortgage confirmation
 

Types of Section 8 Assistance

Tenant-Based
  • May use voucher anywhere Section 8 is accepted
  • Project-Based
  • Voucher can only be used as a specified unit
 
After Acceptance
  • You will be responsible for 30% of your monthly adjusted gross income
  • Unit must meet HUD health and safety regulations
  • You must sign a year lease
  • Must make payments on time or your Section 8 assistance will be revoked
