Moving is not an easy task, and it can become very expensive.  From paying the movers, to buying boxes, it can all add up and become economically stressful on the single parent.  Below is a list of simple ways to save money when you’re on the move.
Sell your stuff
A great way to earn some extra money is to get rid of some of your stuff before you move.  So consider a yard sale.  You’ll have less to transport and you’ll gain some extra cash! You could be surprised as to how much you could make and how many household items you don’t need or want anymore.

Keep donation receipts
Donate instead of tossing out the things that you can’t sell and don’t want.  It could be useful to someone else and if you keep your donation receipts you can claim tax deductions.

Don’t buy boxes
Buying boxes can become expensive, especially since they are essential to moving.  Check your office or work for empty boxes.  Use empty computer paper boxes.  Ask your friends who have recently moved for their boxes or your local liquor store for their empty boxes.  You can even check Freecycle and Craigslist's Free section for empty boxes.

Sell your boxes
After the move, try reselling your boxes to companies like Container Exchanger or Box Cycle.  You can earn a little extra cash instead of just throwing your boxes out.

Ditch the bubble wrap
When packing, wrap up your fragile items in your bed sheets, towels, and clothes instead of buying bubble wrap. It will protect your breakable items and is a great use of box space.

Don’t drive in traffic
If you’re renting a car and transporting your stuff yourself, plan to avoid rush hour so you can get the best possible gas mileage.  Being weighed down and stuck in traffic will cost you gas money.  So plan to leave at a time where there aren’t a lot of people on the road.

Use Coupons
Check out,, and use other coupons to furnish your new place, and save money on groceries, gas, cleaning supplies etc. It’s easy and will save you a lot of money.

Request a Newcomers kit
Request a Newcomers kit from your bank.  It will often include welcome discounts, services, and free products to help you settle into your new place.
