When you think about mindfulness, you probably think about meditation. While that’s certainly a good  way to cultivate it, it isn’t the only way. In today’s installment of our video series with SPAOA Ambassador Frank Shamrock, he explains that mindfulness is one of the core benefits of martial arts. You can watch this video here.

Mindfulness is simply a state of being focused, or aware, of the present moment. Its popularity reached its peak in the west when psychologist realized its ability to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Most importantly, mindfulness has been shown to promote an overall well being, which can be useful for anyone.   

In martial arts, it’s imperative to be in the moment and pay attention to what’s happening. With this awareness, you can better respond to what’s happening around you. This mindfulness is also as important in life as it is in martial arts, for you and your child. Both of you will be able “understand what’s important to you, what has value to you”.
