If you’ve looked into low income housing, you’ve probably heard of the Hope Housing Foundation. This nonprofit organization builds, finances, and renovates low income single -multi-family homes. They also buy, refinance, and upgrade multi-family rental properties that are at risk of being lost from the pool of affordable housing do to lack of funding.

To apply for Hope Housing rentals and rent-to-own properties you must go through your local HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development). HUD will let you know if you are eligible for low income housing by determining if your income is low enough to qualify. This is based on your state and counties median income.

If you are approved through HUD, Hope Housing properties will conduct a screening to verify that you are a good candidate. They will perform a background and credit check and look into your prior renting and income history. If you meet all of these criteria, you will have an in-person interview with someone that runs the property.

To date, most of Hope Housing’s projects have been in the state of Texas. However, they have two completed projects in both Arizona and Oklahoma. It is still smart to check if they are currently working on a project in your area or planning to. You can check out their website (Hope Housing Foundation) for more information.
