Dental problems are painful to suffer through and expensive to fix. They can make it hard to eat and drink, can lower your self-esteem, and some can even threaten your long-term health.

If you’re part of a low-income household, you may be hesitant to get dental help. However, there may be options for free and reduced-cost dental care. Here’s where you should look:

Community Health Center

Your first stop should be your local community health center. Managed by the Health Resources and Services Administration, these clinics provide low-income healthcare, and many provide dental services for free or on a sliding scale.

To find a community health center in your area, visit the HRSA’s website or call 1-888-ASK-HRSA.

Dental Schools

This is another option for low-income dental care, with services often provided on a sliding scale. It’s a win-win for both parties - students need to get real-world experience, and you need an affordable way to get your dental issues treated. Don’t worry - a licensed dentist will be supervising.

The American Dental Association has a list of accredited dental school programs, which you can find here.

Volunteer Programs

If you do your research, you may be able to find events for low-income dental care. If you go this route, be sure to get there early, as time is limited and these programs operate on a first come, first served basis. Dentistry From The Heart is a popular national nonprofit, and you may be able to find more in your area.

Elderly and/or disabled individuals may be eligible for Donated Dental Services. See their website for requirements in your state.

2-1-1

If you need information about resources in your area, this is the number to call. They may be able to help you find information about low-income dental services.

Availability may vary by location, but these resources operate in every state. If help is available in your area, you should be able to find it with one of the programs above.
